IFP a leading player in the 6th European Framework Program for Research and Technological Development (FP6) in the field of energy

16 January 2006

As of 31 December 2005, IFP had scored a very high proposal success rate in FP6 (the 6th European Framework Program for Research and Technological Development). 35 proposals were submitted, from which 23 were selected. Four of them are led by IFP.

These projects concern, essentially, the capture and storage of CO2; biofuels; technologies to reduce the fuel consumption of engines; and hydrogen. The NET (New Energy Technologies) are a priority for European research and fully integral to IFP's strategy.

Of these 23 projects, 12 deal about the subject "Energy" (8 on CO2, 3 on hydrogen, and 1 on biofuels), 7 refer to "Surface transport", and 2 to "Global warming and ecosystems". IFP is involved, in particular, with all major projects on CO2 (Castor, IncaCO2, and Cachet) and, with the Nile project (production of bioethanol from wood and straw), becomes a significant player in European research on biofuels.
Beyond the figures, this success illustrates IFP's strong commitment to the NET and to European collaborative research, the quality of its proposals, recognition of the excellence of its scientific work, and, lastly, its ability to lead European teams, in close partnership with research centers and major industrial players (BMW, BP, Caterpillar, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, PSA, Renault, Statoil, Volkswagen, etc.).

IFP will be contributing up to 10.1 million euros (*) of its own funds for these projects to a total budget of 212.5 (*) million euros, which includes funding by the partners and the European Commission. Through its participation in these large-scale research programs - some of which it is leading - IFP plays a significant role in building Europe's energy future.

(*) estimate as of 31 December 2005

IFP is a research and industrial development, training, and information services center active in hydrocarbons (oil and gas), their uses - in particular by vehicles -, and new energy and environmental technologies (production of fuels from biomass, biofuels, hydrogen, capture and storage of CO2, etc.).
Facing major challenges in the international energy sector - renewing oil reserves, strengthening the energy mix, and combating climate change – IFP aims to innovate, develop and transfer technologies with which to supply energy to meet growing world needs, in the transport and petrochemicals sectors, lastingly and without harm to the environment, for the whole of the 21st century.
