Les Rencontres Scientifiques de l'IFP: Deep Saline Aquifers for Geological Storage of CO2 and Energy

27-29 May 2009
IFP/Rueil-Malmaison

RS Deep saline aquifers - 1st Announcement

First Announcement and Call for Papers

During the coming decades, an escalating demand is expected for accessing the large storage capacities that may be localized in the pore space of deep saline waterbearing reservoir rocks in sedimentary basins. Potentially this space could be suitable for hosting the seasonal or long-term storage of a variety of substances (natural gas, energy storage, CO2).

This international research conference is a unique opportunity for experts from academic research, applied research and industry to present their approaches and to exchange ideas and experience on upcoming applications of aquifer storage for an efficient use of energy in a preserved environment.

After a keynote talk given by E. Huenges (GFZ, Germany), the main topics addressed by the conference will be:

  • Storage of natural gas in aquifers, feedbacks from a mature industry, keynote speaker: G. Kimmerlin (Gaz de France, France)

  • Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) and perspectives of other applications, keynote speaker: B. Sanner (European Geothermal Energy Council, Belgium)

  • Storage of CO2 in saline aquifers
    - Processes induced by CO2 disposal, keynote speaker: K. Pruess (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA)
    - Evaluation of storage potential and assesment of suitable disposal sites, keynote speakers: S. Holloway (British Geological Survey, UK) and F. May (BGR, Germany)

We encourage you to read the first circular and submit abstracts before 24 October 2008 to etienne.brosse@ifp.fr or a-yves.huc@ifp.fr, using the template available hereunder.
