Les Rencontres Scientifiques de l'IFP: "Quantitative Methods for Reservoir Characterization"

3-5 April 2006
IFP/Rueil-Malmaison

Quantitative Methods for Reservoir Characterization

The "Quantitative Methods for Reservoir Characterization" international conference has been held at IFP, in Rueil-Malmaison (near Paris, France) from 3 to 5 April 2006, under the auspices of the French Academy of Sciences.

Over the past years, the development of inversion techniques and statistical methods has led to important advances in reservoir characterization from seismic and production data. However, a reliable quantitative estimation of reservoir properties, including an evaluation of the uncertainties associated with this estimation, is today still a major challenge for both geophysicists and reservoir engineers. In particular, integration now appears to be essential to further progress.

The objective of this IFP international conference was to identify strategies that will enable us to tackle the problems we face. It provided an opportunity for exchanges between experts involved in both industrial and academic research.

The program consisted in 5 sessions:

  • Earth model and a priori information
  • Forward models
  • Inversion methods
  • Uncertainties in reservoir descriptions
  • Case studies, challenges and future use

Nearly 200 professionals of the oil and gas industry and academics interested in:
. Reservoir monitoring
. Reservoir engineering
. Geophysics
. Geosciences applied to reservoir characterization (geology, petrophysics…)
and representing about 20 countries, were attending this international conference.
