Improvement of recovery

Enhanced oil & gas recovery requires a better reservoir description for optimizing the production. In this context, IFP makes its knowledge and know-how in the field of enhanced recovery available to its customers, in particular for the study of certain reservoirs where characterization and monitoring are especially complex.
Thanks to the data gathered on these fields, the partner operator enjoys privileged access to IFP's latest results, before they are made available on the market.

Software created by IFP's research

The research done by IFP and its industrial partners has led to the creation of several software programs available on the market.

  • FracaFlow is the new generation software for fracture modeling. Based on OpenFlow platform, it enables geologists and reservoir engineers to predict the distribution of networks of fractures and take them into account in the dynamic model of a reservoir. It is used in particular to determine the fracture equivalent permeability from analysis and modelling of the network of fractures. FracaFlow is marketed by Beicip-Franlab.

  • CondorFlow is the new generation software for advanced history match. Based on OpenFlow platform, it enables to take into account production data to match an integrated geoscience workflow. CondorFlow goes beyond the classic history matching procedure, which tends to iterate on dynamic parameters only: CondorFlow adjusts all uncertainty parameters throughout the workflow, from geological modeling through upscaling to reservoir simulation, using innovative methods such as Gradual Deformation Method. The workflow can be a combination of any Third Parties modeling tool at both static and dynamic steps. CondorFlow is marketed by Beicip-Franlab.

  • Cougar® is used to quantify the uncertainties and rapidly evaluate the risk in connection with the development of a field. With its integrated reservoir simulator, this software can be used to obtain quick answers and to perform sensitivity analyses. Cougar methodology is continuously updated through the COUGAR 3 JIP. Cougar® is marketed by Schlumberger.

Equipment / Products created by IFP's research

Concurrently with the development of software, the research done by IFP and its industrial partners leads to the development of products and tools aimed at enhancing petroleum recovery.

  • Darcylog is a tool that measures the permeability of the cuttings recovered at the well-head.

  • Radiagreen® is a line of chemicals developed in partnership with the Oleon oleochemical company. These products, derived from biomass, are naturally nontoxic and rapidly biodegradable. They are used in drilling and production to minimize damage to reservoirs and allow the rapid bringing in of a well by injection. Radiagreen® is marketed by Oleon.

  • Additives facilitating petroleum transport: IFP develops solutions to facilitate the transport of heavy crudes. Traditionally, naphtha is used to lower their viscosity and thereby facilitate their transport. IFP's work has shown that an additive can deliver equivalent performance with less naphtha. Result: pipeline capacity is increased without major investments.

  • Stargel is a line of microgels developed in partnership with SEPPIC, a chemical company. These products are dedicated to water shut off, sand control and conformance control applications with excellent tolerance to high temperature, salinity and environmental constraints. The technology has been validated through the Stargel JIP sponsored by GDF, NEXEN, STATOIL-HYDRO and TOTAL and is currently marketed by LIPESA.

Joint Industry-funded Projects (JIP)

IFP organizes and coordinates collaborative research projects bringing together several industrial partners who jointly fund a program designed to solve a given problem. This formula means that the financial risks can be shared upstream and the research results downstream.
