Combustion control

Combustion control is a crucial theme in the engine research carried out at IFP. It concerns combustion in both gasoline and diesel engines.

Control the parameters of combustion

From understanding combustion modes to combustion chamber design, IFP:

  • devises original computation models in order to understand the phenomena and control the parameters involved in combustion at all phases (initiation, propagation and formation of pollutants),
  • applies modeling and optical diagnostic tools to the combustion chamber development process,
  • develops new combustion modes to meet performance, consumption, and pollution requirements.

Examples of the results obtained by IFP include assessment of the potential of turbocharged direct injection stratified gasoline combustion, the significant extension of the CAI combustion zone or identification of the key parameters involved in air/fuel preparation in NADITM (Narrow angle direct injection) low-NOx combustion mode.
