A demonstrator is the conversion of innovation into a prototype vehicle.
It requires the application of a comprehensive set of skills, from combustion chamber design to production of onboard electronics.
Thee purpose of these demonstrator vehicles is to demonstrate the reduction in pollutant emissions and fuel consumption, using new combustion concepts combined with component innovations. An engine control system designed especially for the demonstrator will thus make it possible to make full use of the innovation’s potential.
Working in partnership with Valeo, GDF Suez and ADEME (Agence de l’Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l’Énergie), IFP has developed a standard Smart vehicle that runs on natural gas.
This is a mild-hybrid vehicle in which complete IFP control has been installed, ensuring optimized management of the natural gas engine, and also of the gear box and alternator-starter.
The project was conducted in partnership with Faurecia Système d'Echappement and Honeywell Turbo Technologies and with the contribution of Renault.
In controlled ignition engines, IFP is renowned for its work in the field of downsizing (reduction of engine displacement and compensation by turbocharging), making it possible to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20%. This vehicle integrates demonstration of this concept with complete IFP engine control, making full use of the technology’s potential.
IFP has developed a demonstrator vehicle on a VelSatis base with a 2-liter diesel engine. It has fitted it with a low-NOx combustion chamber patented by IFP and IFP engine control. This engine control incorporates advanced mode change management algorithms (between conventional modes and HCCI).
