Engine and vehicle modeling and simulation

The use of engine and vehicle modeling and simulation tools now occupies a dominant position in the field of engine development.

For a number of years, IFP has been recognized for its expertise in the field of 3D engine modeling and its teams have played a major role in the development of physical models of combustion-related phenomena (spray, auto-ignition, initiation, turbulent combustion and pollutant models), with these models being incorporated into its own engine CFD code (IFP-C3D distributed by LMS) and now also found in industrial engine codes.

In parallel, working in partnership with Cerfacs (European Center for Research and Advanced Training in Scientific Computation) in Toulouse, IFP is co-developing AVBP, a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) code which, in the near future, will provide access to additional information on the way engines function, with, for example, an understanding of cycle-to-cycle variations.

Since 2000 and the emergence of the use of system simulation in the field of engine development in general and engine control in particular, IFP has been developing simulation tool libraries dedicated to the engine environment (IFP-DRIVE for vehicle modeling, IFP-ENGINE for engine modeling and IFP-EXHAUST for exhaust modeling), which are then integrated into and distributed with the LMS Imagine.Lab environment, in partnership with LMS.

These various developments at IFP enable its modeling/simulation teams to be very closely involved in engine design support studies, either at IFP or in partnership with car and heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers and OEMs.
