IFP-Lyon has grown deep roots in the Rhône-Alpes region since it first set foot there in 1967. It is a member of that region’s public-sector research federation (CEPRRA) and has built close ties with:
- leading local industrial firms,
- local universities and grandes écoles
- local research centers.
IFP-Lyon is also one of the Lyon École Doctorale de Chimie‘s (Postgraduate School of Chemistry’s) host laboratories.
IFP-Lyon is involved in two regional competitiveness clusters.
An international project run by Axelera, an association. This cluster’s mandate entails channeling avant-garde chemistry towards ecodesign, targeting applications in catalysis, processes and materials.
IFP is one of this cluster’s founding members and, in particular, in charge of the arm conducting research on Processes. Via Axelera, IFP is also involved in the Institut de Chimie de Lyon and in the region’s research centers.

This cluster counts 65 business firms and almost 40 laboratories, which have mapped out four research and development programs encompassing 42 projects. Its total budget amounts to €148 million.
IFP originally played a part structuring this cluster, and is currently playing an active role leading the technical chapter of the Powertrains program.

This office channels IFP’s expertise towards SMEs with a view to supporting technological innovation.
Working with roughly 30 SMEs a year is another aspect of IFP-Lyon’s efforts to cement its local presence. A number of companies in the Rhône-Alpes region manufacture or market products using IFP-developed technology.
