The road transport sector accounts for 20% of CO2 emissions of human origin on a worldwide level. In France, where the nuclear sector plays a dominant role in energy production, the relative proportion of CO2 emissions due to transport in comparison with those due to industrial installations exceeds 30%.
It is therefore crucially important to control these emissions in order to protect the environment and, more specifically, minimize their potential impact on climate.
At the same time, pollutant emissions must be reduced on a local level for public health reasons. Pollution control standards are increasingly stringent in this respect.
Concerns also exist with regard to energy supply conditions and rising fuel prices.
These issues are central to IFP’s strategic priorities. On the strength of its dual expertise in the field of fuels and engines, IFP is ideally placed to be able to propose innovative solutions for ever cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles.

These research themes have the potential to cut the fuel consumption of vehicles by up to 50%.
The various research programs conducted by IFP and realised in collaboration with industrial partners (car manufacturers, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), oil companies, etc.) are designed to ensure that the latter have access to the most appropriate skills, design tools and methodologies, and, at the same time, to offer innovative solutions that address today’s technological and environmental challenges.
