Panorama 2007 : "What future and what role for biofuels?"

Interest in biofuels is constantly increasing, driven by two concerns: protection of the environment and an imperative need for alternative energies.

The use of biofuels offers two advantages:

• it reduces the transport sector's reliance on oil and gas, thereby helping to secure supplies;
• it reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

However, the area of cultivable land required combined with the competing needs associated with food crop uses mean that the production potential of biofuels is limited. As a result, research is now focusing on second-generation technologies using plant waste along with non-food resources, such as straw or wood.

Against this background, some crucial questions emerge:
What role will biofuels play in the fuel pool?
What will the environmental benefits of each system be?
Should we design biorefineries?
Will it be necessary to adapt engine technologies?
Will biofuels open up new opportunities for the agriculture industry?

Panorama 2007 provided concrete answers to all these questions, bringing together producers, refiners, car manufacturers and politicians.
