Getting more from oil and gas fields

To obtain the best possible return from a field, oil recovery methods must be improved. At present, the average recovery rate stands at 35%. Increasing this rate would considerably increase usable oil reserves.

There are two ways in which this can be achieved:

  • extracting any remaining reserves from fields which have already been produced and are now closed,
  • extending the production life of wells which are now being produced, particularly those in very large fields.

In order to propose solutions that optimize oil production, IFP is focusing on:

  • the static characterisation of reservoirs and fluids,
  • the dynamic simulation and monitoring of fields,
  • improvements of the productivity and injectivity of wells,
  • the use of heavy crudes.
