Controlled CO2

Capturing and storing CO2 to combat the greenhouse effect

Converging scientific data on global warming reveal the urgent need to roll out technologies cutting greenhouse gas emissions on a worldwide scale. Increasing energy demand means that it will not be possible in the near future to abandon fossil fuels (oil, natural gas and coal), which are the main emitters of greenhouse gases.
In order to reconcile the use of these resources with control of the emissions involved in climate change, CO2 capture and storage are a promising approach with significant economic and industrial implications.

 

Research areas

IFP is fully committed to researching new technologies in the field of CO2 capture, transport and storage; the expertise required to develop these areas is the same expertise employed in oil production.

Today, IFP is a prominent leader in this field at European level.

Joint research projects

In addition, IFP leads or participates in a number of public-funded projects at a national scale (ANR, ADEME) and on an international scale (European Commission). Industrial partners are also contributing to this research by funding a number of consortia.

IFP drives the Coach project aimed at getting the European Union and China to work together to pave the way for a transition to clean coal-fired power stations.

IFP is taking part in or coordinating several projects funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and the Unified Interministerial Fund (FUI) in partnership with numerous universities and French industry players. For example, the objective of the Acacia project, approved by the Axelera competitiveness cluster, is to develop breakthrough CO2 capture processes.

IFP is also involved in a raft of European projects, including CO2ReMoVe, Ecco and Geocapacity (storage), Cesar and Cleo (capture) and the Dynamis project for large-scale hydrogen and electricity production using fossil fuels with CO2 capture and storage.
