Use of natural gas and coal

IFP continues to work on its Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process in collaboration with ENI, an Italian energy group.

Synfuels from natural gas

In 2008, IFP pursued work on its Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process as part of a joint project with the Italian Group Eni.

The process is employed to produce synfuels containing no sulfur or aromatics from natural gas: a technology known as Gas to Liquids or GTL.

In addition, IFP owns the Fischer-Tropsch wax hydroisomerization technology, making it possible to perfect the production chain: Fischer-Tropsch synthesis produces waxes that must be isomerized to be used as fuels.

Liquefaction or gasification of coal for fuel production

Where coal is concerned, the direct option of liquefaction for fuel production is seen by IFP as a complement to the indirect option using gasification and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The major issue relating to both these options remains CO2 emissions, which have to be controlled by reduction at source and capture/storage.
