40 percent of world natural gas reserves contain acid compounds, among them H2S, at concentrations that in some cases exceed 20%. To meet growing world demand, it is now becoming necessary to tap these gas deposits.
Moreover, the sulfur market is now saturated, and limiting emissions of pollutant gases into the atmosphere is a major concern. This obliges gas operators to come up with innovative development schemes to produce these reserves profitably without harming the environment.
In response to this challenge, IFP, Total, and Prosernat propose an original scheme: extract the H2S contained in the raw gases in liquid form, at high pressure, making it economical to reinject it into the underground reservoir. This pretreatment step is followed by a conventional finishing treatment with amines to reach the commercial specifications of the natural gas.
The advantages sought are two-fold: a sharp cut in investment and operating costs, on the one hand, and a large reduction of emissions into the atmosphere, on the other.
SPREX®, is an innovative and attractive technological solution that gives access to new reserves of gas in a sustainable development approach. With SPREX®, IFP, Total and Prosernat complete the line of sour gas treatment processes available to operators, while meeting their economic and regulatory requirements in this field.
