The oil companies, by subcontracting a large share of their work, in exploration/production as well as in refining, most often act as prime contractors, thereby creating a large market for equipment, services and engineering. The many companies, of very different sizes, that serve this market together constitute the oil service and supply industry.
A strong French presence in this market made itself felt early on, thanks in particular to ambitious research and development programs - often under the umbrella of the CEP&M and the COPREP (today disappeared) - that created and sustained a solid technological base.
The perceived absence of regular statistics about this French oil service and supply industry led the GEP (Groupement des Entreprises Parapétrolières et paragazières), the DIREM (Direction des ressources énergétiques et minérales), the CEP&M-COPREP and IFP, back in 1978, to initiate a nation-wide annual survey.
This document begins with a rapid overview of the international oil scene, before presenting the analysis results of the latest survey, providing a clear picture of the French oil service and supply industry situation in 2007, and proposes, for 2008, orders of magnitude based on estimates furnished by the companies themselves.
