IFP’s efforts to boost its research potential involve establishing and nurturing several partnerships. Scientific co-operation, in these cases, can take on very different forms: they can involve teaming up on specific projects or research agendas, or transferring expertise.
In the majority of cases, IFP and partner researchers publish findings in joint papers when their projects draw to an end. IFP’s applied-research projects can thus harnesses the latest breakthroughs in fundamental research.
We are currently working on more than 200 research projects alongside academic researchers in France, Europe and beyond.
IFP signs between 130 and 150 new research co-operation agreements with university laboratories every year. These agreements span one to three years. At any given point in time, IFP is working on between 250 and 300 ongoing projects with universities.
IFP also takes in students working on their doctoral theses. Doing so allows it to work with the French and foreign universities that referred them to us.
IFP is involved in a number of thematic projects run by the National Research Agency (ANR – Agence Nationale de la Recherche) and active in several competitiveness clusters. Our teams, in other words, are working side by side with France’s foremost research and development organizations. These include the following:
- the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS),
- the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM),
- the Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique (CEA),
- the Institut National de Recherche sur les Transports et leur Sécurité (INRETS),
- the Institut National de l’Environnement Industriel et des Risques (INERIS),
- the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA),
- the Agence Nationale pour la gestion des Déchets Radioactifs (ANDRA),
- etc.
IFP has signed framework research agreements with several of these organizations (BRGM, CNRS, etc.), and its researchers serve on several scientific boards (BRGM, INRA, etc.).

IFP plays an active role contributing to and running research networks enabling industrial and academic partners to exchange views and stay abreast of each other’s developments. Examples include the following.
- Groupement Scientifique Moteurs (GSM),
- Club sur les Actions de Recherche pour les Ouvrages en Mer (CLAROM),
- Pôle d’Excellence en Sciences de la Terre,
- Club CO2.
IFP is also active in several European projects. For example, it is coordinating:
- Castor, a project focusing on CO2 capture,
- NILE (New Improvement for Lignocellulosic Ethanol), a project aiming to develop cost-effective bio-ethanol production processes.

Organizing scientific conferences IFP organizes conferences to promote exchanges with academic circles. Its Rencontres Scientifiques are one example. They attract a broad array of researchers to discuss different issues every year. Its 2007 gathering was sponsored by the French Académie des Sciences and broached the molecular structure of heavy oil and products of coal liquefaction. |
