IFP and the National Research Agency

The National Research Agency (ANR – Agence Nationale de la Recherche) was established on 1 January 2007 to fund research projects. Its ultimate goal is to increase the number of research projects underway throughout the scientific community, and it selects the ones it will fund through a competitive and peer-review process. It is part of the new French Research and Innovation System.

ANR liaises with public-sector research agencies and business firms to fulfill its dual mandate to generate knowledge and to promote exchanges between public-sector and business-firm laboratories by facilitating partnerships.

IFP sees ANR’s calls for projects as opportunities to bolster ties with other research organizations. In 2006, we submitted 50 proposals and earned funding for 17 of them, including the ones dealing with:

  • capturing and storing CO2 (6 projects),
  • hydrogen (4 projects),
  • transport (3 projects),
  • biofuels (2 projects).

IFP is now also serving as the support structure on two of ANR’s new thematic programs, namely:

  • chemistry and processes for sustainable development,
  • storage of energy.

In other words, ANR has entrusted IFP with running programs (i.e. calling for projects, convening the strategic and assessment committees, selecting projects, and monitoring rollout) on its behalf.
