The aim of competitiveness clusters is to foster innovation and thereby bolster French industry’s competitive edge over the short and medium term.
Today, IFP is involved in four particularly active world-class competitiveness clusters and provides its expertise to several others.
IFP is one of the founding member, alongside Arkema, CNRS, Rhodia and Suez, of the Lyon and Rhône-Alpes Chemistry and Environment competitiveness cluster, led by the Axelera association. At the end of 2007, two years after its creation, the cluster boasted 128 members, including SME-SMIs (one third) and research laboratories and institutes (another third). It has been awarded funding to the tune of €45 million for four major projects and has launched six technology-based projects worth an overall budget of €70 million.
The projects in which IFP is most involved concern:
IFP is actively involved in the Lyon Urban Trucks and Bus (LUTB) cluster, which it helped to organize. The goal of the LUTB cluster is to take up the challenges raised by a growing demand for mobility, regarding both people and goods, in urban environments.
In charge of the "Powertrain and Drivetrain" program, IFP is a partner in several innovative projects dedicated to heavy-duty vehicle powertrains.
IFP is an active member of the Mov'eo cluster focusing on the Greater Paris and Upper and Lower Normandy regions, and for which the theme is "Cars and Public Transport". Mov'eo brings together partners from the world of industry (Renault, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Safran, Siemens, Total, Valéo, Véolia, etc.) along with research centers and academic institutes (CEA, Écoles des mines, INRETS, etc.). These partners are supported by a dense and well-organized network of SMEs-SMIs.
The cluster’s goal is to foster the development of safer and more eco-friendly cars and public transport.
IFP provides its expertise in two areas:
In the Greater Paris System@tic cluster, focusing on high-efficiency computing, software and complex systems, IFP carries out research on real-time system modeling, turbulent combustion simulation for engines, process simulation, molecular modeling and simulation of fluid flows in oil reservoirs.
IFP participates in Tenerrdis, a national cluster, working on projects involving synfuels made from lignocellulosic biomass. This competitiveness cluster brings together organizations from the Rhône-Alpes region and is developing new energy technologies for application in the transport and construction sectors.
IFP has also joined Aerospace Valley, a competitiveness cluster in the Midi-Pyrenees and Aquitaine region, to contribute its expertise in fuels through the CALIN project and to propose alternative jet fuels.
IFP is involved in the new Greater Paris region competitiveness cluster, ASTech, dedicated to aeronautics. Created in July 2007, it brings together industry players and scientific institutes (Dassault Aviation, EADS-ST, Cnes, Onera, CNRS, IFP, etc.) to focus on the themes of onboard energy, materials and processes, vehicle architecture and propulsion.
IFP contributes its expertise in two areas: biofuels that can be incorporated into jet fuel and combustion modeling.
