IFP has partnerships with more than 200 academic research teams in France, Europe and beyond. Scientific co-operation, in these cases, can take on very different forms: they can involve teaming up on specific projects or research agendas, or transferring expertise.
IFP plays an active role contributing to and running research networks enabling industrial and academic partners to exchange views and stay abreast of each other’s developments. PhD theses, led by a university manager and supervised by an IFP sponsor, represent an ideal channel for long-term research partnerships.
Our teams are working side by side with France’s foremost research and development organizations: the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM), the Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique (CEA), the Institut National de Recherche sur les Transports et leur Sécurité (INRETS), the Institut National de l’Environnement Industriel et des Risques (INERIS), the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), the Agence Nationale pour la gestion des Déchets Radioactifs (ANDRA), etc.
IFP has signed a framework agreement with the Pierre and Marie Curie University – Paris 6, the terms of which allow for the latter to take part in the transfer of research results to which its researchers have contributed. It was also involved in the renewal project relating to two doctoral Schools run by University of Paris 6: Geosciences and natural resources, and Physical and Analytical Chemistry. IFP has signed a partnership agreement relating to research and training with the higher education and research cluster (Pôle de recherche et d’enseignement supérieur – PRES) at the University of Lyon.
The framework agreement signed with the CNRS has proved useful as a reference for numerous partnerships with its laboratories.
IFP is involved in a number of thematic projects run by the ANR National Research Agency (Agence Nationale de la Recherche ANR) and active in several competitiveness clusters.
IFP earned the Carnot label for its overall efforts in the field of fuel and engines.

IFP is also active in several European projects. IFP was coordinating:
- Castor, a project focusing on CO2 capture
- NILE (New Improvement for Lignocellulosic Ethanol), a project aiming to develop cost-effective bio-ethanol production processes.
